Top 5 Gifts for a Stay-at-Home Mom

Life as a stay-at-home mom can get pretty hectic, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Without realizing it, a day can fly by between laundry, errands, and pulling together meals for the family. Here are some suggestions for practical and fun gifts for a stay-at-home mom you know who seems to do it all.

1. Washer and Dryer

I am forever guilty of falling in love with commercials that feature the laundry room of my dreams—that ever-spotless space with gleaming appliances and stacks of cushy towels that probably retain their color and fluff forever. Any home that frequently does multiple loads of laundry can benefit from a new washing machine and dryer. A reliable machine always makes the daunting task of laundry piling up a little bit easier to tackle.

2. Cleaning Service

While household chores aren’t solely my responsibility, I do a lot of picking up around the home. I appreciated receiving a gift certificate for housecleaning last year for Mother’s Day. I had the chance to take a break from rubber gloves and walking around the house with a dishtowel stuffed in my back pocket. It was great to have a professional crew come in and give the house a thorough cleaning. The gift gave me a chance to spend time with my family without worrying that the dishes or vacuuming had to be done when we got home. Any gift that reduces the load on Mom’s shoulders has to be listed among the top gifts for a stay-at-home mom.

3. Exercise Equipment

Be careful to only give exercise equipment if it has been hinted at. A well-meaning gift like a workout outfit can easily be misinterpreted, resulting in hurt feelings. Workout equipment like a treadmill saves a SAHM from having to schedule a trip to the gym, which can be hard to squeeze into an already-busy day. Being able to get in a quick walk or a short yoga session will positively impact a SAHM’s day. The convenience will especially come in handy when winter mornings make that walk around the neighborhood a little too brisk. Saving the money that would normally go towards a gym membership will also be good for families living on a budget.

4. Spa Day

Giving the stay-at-home mom in your life a gift certificate for a spa day is a great way to show her how much her efforts are appreciated. As most SAHMs—myself included—tend to run around in what is comfortable and not easily stained, a chance to get pampered is a wonderful break from the chaos of running after small children all day. Specific treatment options include a pedicure (perhaps combined with a manicure), a massage, or a trip to a local hair salon for a cut and style. A couple hours away from the circus at home can make a world of difference to an overworked mom.

5. Purse

I have yet to meet a stay-at-home mom who wouldn’t love to ditch her diaper bag for a designer purse and a night out with her spouse. A guilty pleasure like a fancy handbag or clutch is great incentive to celebrate down time with something besides takeout and Netflix. Every once in a while, it’s nice to carry a bag that isn’t weighed down with wet wipes, pacifiers, and toys to amuse the kids during a delay.

It doesn’t take much effort to get your stay-at-home wife a nice gift that lets her know her efforts around the house are appreciated. Gifts that speak to convenience as well as pampering are all appreciated and will be remembered fondly long after they’re given.
